Growing Interest of Students in Technological Subjects

Businesses are becoming fully dependent on technology day by day. The digital era needs more experts to explore the competitive online world. So, the interest of students in technological subjects is growing with time.

The latest subject data from UCAS also indicates the same. It can be noticed from the last ten years that the interest of students in preferring engineering and computer science courses more than other subjects. According to the UCAS figure –

● Computer science courses have climbed up to almost 50% from 2011 to 2020 acc. to Interest of Students.
● Engineering courses have climbed up 21% from 2011 to 2020.
● A 400% rise comparing to 2011 in acceptances to artificial intelligence (AI) courses in 2020.

On the other hand, students’ interest in language-related subjects has lost the demand nowadays compared with previous years. The declining percentage is 36% from 2011 to 2020.

Moreover, psychology, law, humanities, nursing, and other subjects are also on the high priority list. But, among all of them, the demand for AI is noticeable. To keep pace with the competitive world, specialists in these subjects are required. Julia Adamson, Director of Education at BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, believes that skilled people are needed in computer science and AI for the UK’s economic development. She also believes that the initiation of the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) is providing more young people a positive experience of computing at school and helping to raise the subject demand acc. to the interest of students at degree level and beyond.
