History

Located in the centre of London, England, City, University of London, or simply City, is a public research university. Originally established in 1894 under the name Northampton Institute, the school changed its name to City University in 1966 and again in 2016 to reflect its modern identity.

The Northampton Institute was established to provide technical education to young men in the area who were interested in engineering and science. The institute was named after the Marquess of Northampton, who was a supporter of technical education. The institute quickly got a good name for its engineering skills and was one of the first places to offer degree programmes in the field.

During World War II, the institute was heavily damaged by bombing, and many buildings were destroyed. After the war, the institute was rebuilt, and new programmes were added, including a School of Journalism, which has become one of the most respected journalism schools in the world. In the following years, the city continued to expand and diversify, adding new courses and faculties, including business, law, and social sciences. Today, City is a  leading university in the UK , known for its research and teaching in various fields, including computer science, engineering, business, law, social sciences, and journalism.

In 2016, the university changed its name to City, University of London to better reflect its location and status as a leading global institution. The Islington campus is home to City, University of London. St. Paul’s Cathedral, the British Museum, and the River Thames are all within 2 kilometres. Liverpool Street, King’s Cross, and London Bridge are the closest major train stations to the City campuses and halls, and they all provide connections to Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted.
