Northumbria University Newcastle

Overview

Northumbria University is one of the largest and most successful institutions in the United Kingdom, with over 26,000 students from more than 140 countries. Through its predecessor institutions, Northumbria can trace its roots all the way back to the Victorian era. Newcastle University began in 1969 as Newcastle Polytechnic and was opened to the public in 1992.

One of the greatest institutions in the United Kingdom for studying engineering, computing, sciences, business, law, design, the built and natural environment, the arts, social sciences, psychology, sport, and health. Teachers have extensive knowledge and a genuine interest in sharing it with their students.

The University offers a wide variety of “conversion” master’s degrees to students who already have a bachelor’s degree in one field but want to switch specialisations. AACSB has awarded Northumbria University’s School of Business and Accountancy dual accreditation, making it the only European business school to do so.

Northumbria consistently ranks at the top of modern universities in quality assessments in the United Kingdom and among the most successful institutions in terms of graduate employment, with more than 95% of its alumni either working or enrolled in postsecondary study.

The University has a 65% admission rate and is consistently ranked among the Top 25 universities in the UK for placing graduates in highly skilled jobs.

History

The University of Northumbria in the UK has its roots in Rutherford College in Newcastle upon Tyne, founded in 1880. The university started with a polytechnic’s status. In 1969, the university was founded by the amalgamation of three universities in the Newcastle area: Rutherford College of Technology, The College of Art and Industrial Design, and The Municipal College of Commerce.

Further building itself on the foundations of these well-established colleges, Newcastle Polytechnic became one of the leading polytechnic institutes in the country.

In 1984, the polytechnic became the hub of initial teacher training due to the inauguration of the City College of Education. Further, the Northern Counties College of Education was also incorporated in 1976.

In addition to nurse training, the polytechnic also started offering occupational therapy and physiotherapy training in 1976. Finally, in 1992, the institute was granted the status of a university.

Since the university has been affiliated as a research institute and has opened campuses both domestically and internationally in London and Amsterdam, The University of Northumbria now has four campuses across the United Kingdom, comprising over 30,000 students hailing from over 140 countries worldwide. With a silver TEF award to its name, the University of Northumbria is recognised as one of the UK’s leading educational institutions.

Location

Located around four hours north of London by train, Newcastle lies in northeast England. With a population of roughly 200,000, it was named 2011’s Best City for Students. Students of all stripes can enjoy the city’s many cultural offerings, which are located on both sides of the city’s famed dividing river. The sandy beaches of Whitley Bay and Tynemouth can be reached by taking the Metro from the city centre, which connects the university.
