In 1897, the University of Sheffield originated with the amalgamation of Sheffield Medical
School, Firth College, and Sheffield Technical School. William Mitchinson Hicks, the principal of Firth College,

buildings.
In 1905, Sheffield was given university status and granted a royal charter by King Edward
