Our student body, recently ranked seventh in the UK for overall satisfaction with teaching (Guardian League rankings 2022), is the driving force behind everything we do. With an acceptance rate of 83%, a 7th place finish in teaching quality and a 9th place finish in student experience, the University of Chichester is a top choice for prospective international students.

History

There was much discussion regarding the separation of church and state at universities in the early 19th century. University College London was founded in 1828 as what was then the first secular university in the country. As a result, it was decided that London needed one more university to acknowledge the church’s position in society formally. In 1836, William Otter was ordained as the Bishop of Chichester, where he continued to advocate for education. In April 1839, a memorial college dedicated to the education of teachers was founded in his honour.

In October 1850, the institution formally changed its name from Bishop’s Training College to Bishop Otter College to reflect its new location. These structures form the heart of the original university campus in Chichester.

In 1873, thanks to Louisa Hubbard’s efforts to normalise the role of women in education, the institution officially admitted female students for the first time. It wasn’t until 1957 that boys were allowed in the classroom.

During World War II, the RAF seized Bishop Otter College and moved the students and faculty to Stockwell College in Bromley. One of Chichester’s Bishop Otter campus lecture halls was converted into the  Operations Room of RAF Tangmere , the nerve centre directing D-Day landing fighter aviation squadrons.
