University of Stirling

Overview

The University of Stirling, in central Scotland, is home to 14,000 students from more than 120 different countries. The University was established in 1967 and is located on a former castle estate dating back to the 18th century on the banks of a lake and surrounded by picturesque hills.

Even beyond its remote Scottish setting, the University of Stirling retains a number of distinguishing features. It was the first of its kind to adopt a two-semester format and modular degrees, providing students with a considerable deal of leeway in terms of programme entry and exit points. Modules are the building blocks of degrees, so students are free to switch majors whenever their interests do.

Students at the University of Stirling ranked it first in Scotland for having good teachers, quality lecturers, and performance feedback in the 2016 International Student Barometer, and more than 95% of all undergraduates were employed or enrolled in further study fifteen months after graduation.

The same goes for internships and other forms of work experience. One such programme is called “Making the Most of Your Masters,” and it is part of a collaborative academic effort between the universities of Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Student Money Advisers can assist with budgeting and applying for financial aid, and a variety of scholarships are available to students from outside the EU and the United States.

History

The University of Stirling was established in 1967 and has since assisted its alumni, faculty, and students in making a difference in the world.

In the beginning, there was a visionary who saw that society was undergoing radical change and that this new world required adaptable individuals.

A total of 164 undergrads and 31 graduates started classes at the brand new Pathway Building on September 18th, 1967. Since then, the organisation has expanded to include more than 18,000 students from 140+ nations and more than 100,000 graduates in 180+ regions.

Location

The campus at Stirling is situated on the water’s edge next to a castle built in the 18th century. Just a ten-minute bus ride away, the city of Stirling welcomes visitors with its castle, sports village, and bustling shopping district. The airports in Glasgow and Edinburgh are close by, and Stirling has a central location in Scotland, earning it the nickname “Gateway to the Highlands.”

The National Swimming Academy and the Gannochy National Tennis Centre are only two of the country’s top-tier sports facilities that can be found on the campus. The Scottish Institute of Sport, the Scottish Swimming Association, and the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland are all based in the same building on campus.

The University of Stirling’s Student Union sponsors an International Society, and the university itself provides intensive English language instruction over the course of 12 weeks.
