University of Sussex

Overview

Located in Brighton, on England’s southeastern coast, the University of Sussex has been educating students since its inception in 1961. The University of Sussex has a 60-year history of providing intellectually stimulating, culturally rich, and personally rewarding experiences to its students through its curriculum, research, and campus life. To sum up, Sussex is at the forefront of innovation and leadership in various fields, from scientific research to international policy to student services and professional development. A Sussex native can now be found making a unique and important contribution in every sector of modern life and every country throughout the globe.

Around 18,000 students representing more than 100 nationalities are enrolled at the University of Sussex this year. According to Times Higher Education, the University of Sussex is tied for 151st place worldwide. Several of Sussex’s academic departments are among the world’s top 100 in their respective fields. If you look at the  QS World University Rankings  by Subject 2022, you’ll see that the University of Sussex is ranked first for Development Studies. You can find a comprehensive list of the many financial aid opportunities available to incoming freshmen at Sussex.

Three Nobel laureates, twelve members of the British Academy, and a recipient of the Crafoord Prize have all worked at Sussex University, demonstrating the institution’s commitment to research. Based on its examination of the outcomes of the Research Excellence Framework 2021 (REF 2021), the Times Higher Education has placed the University of Sussex at number 27 among all UK universities in terms of both ‘Research Power’ and ‘Market Share.

History

In 1959, the university was founded as a limited liability corporation, and on August 16, 1961, it received its Royal Charter. Other than Keele Institution, this was the first British university to open after  WWII . The university’s innovative structure, with its several Schools of Study and interdisciplinary approach to education, has made it a leader in the field.

As a result of the university’s emphasis on interdisciplinary study, graduates of Sussex would be well-equipped with both the requisite core competencies in a given field of study and a broad range of supplementary knowledge and experience. For instance, in the first year of college, scientific majors took art classes, and vice versa for the art majors.
