Overview
History
The University of the West of England has its roots going back to 1595 when it started off as a local traditional vocational training, called Merchant Venturers Navigation School. By 1894, the school expanded its roots and became the Merchant Venturers Technical College. In 1970, the Merchant Venturers Technical College became Bristol Polytechnic with the main campus at Ashley Down. By the end of 1976, Redland, Ashley Down, Unity Street and Frenchay had become a part of the Bristol Polytechnic.
In 1992, the University of the West of England was granted university status after the
Further and Higher Education Act was released that year. In 2016, UWE Bristol rebranded itself by introducing a new
logo as part of its marketing strategy.
The coat of arms of the University of the West of England is a homage
to the
history of merchant navigation school and is still recognized and valued to the present day. The crest is a direct
representation of the sea and its association with Bristol.
The Merchant Venturer’s Navigation School is
represented
by the ship’s mainmast. There are other symbols embodying guidance, hope and desire for learning, manifesting the
vision of UWE Bristol.

UWE Bristol, or the University of the West of England, is a public research university located that is located in Bristol. The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) is comprised of three campuses located in and around Bristol. These campuses are home to a total of twelve individual departments. The majority of classes are held at Frenchay Campus, making it the largest campus. Courses related to cultural activities and the arts can be found at City Campus. Accommodation
Students can expect to pay up to £9,000 to £15,000 each year on accommodation
costs. The University of the West of England provides guaranteed
accommodation to all first-year students who are enrolled in a full-time study programme. The on-campus
accommodation facility comprises of around 4,000 rooms and all UWE accommodation comes equipped with 24/7
security, Wifi and laundry facilities.
On-campus accommodation is provided on all the campuses. The Glenside campus
