Overview

The University of York is a member of the Russell Group, ensuring excellence in teaching, academia, research, learning, and employment opportunities. The Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings ranked the university in the 139th position in 2023. The University of York also held the Gold Teaching Excellence Framework or TEF award and was ranked top for excellent Academic Support among other Russell Group members.



History

The University of York has its earliest roots in 1617 when James I was presented with a petition for a university. From there, a series of other discussions eventually led to Olivia Sheldon pushing the agenda further. Finally, in 1963, study abroad opportunities at the University of York opened its doors to 230 students. Initially, 28 academic and administrative staff members worked across six departments. After that, the educational institution achieved excellence in various fields.

Today, it is a member of the Russell Group and associated with various other organizations, including the White Rose University Consortium and Worldwide Universities Network. With over 250 courses, the University of York is committed to delivering the highest standard of academic and research opportunities.   • The University of York is a Russell Group university known for its high performance and intensive research. It is also recognised as one of the world’s premier institutions for inspirational and life-changing research. In addition, according to Times Higher Education (THE), this university has achieved the world’s top 45th position for its School of Arts and Humanities. The institution is also recognised for its 100th position in the School of Social Science and 16th position in the United Kingdom stated by THE.

    The university ranked 10th in research impact compliance with the most recent Research Excellent Framework (REF 2014).     To maintain its high education, teaching, and employability status, the University of York ensures all students can realise their true potential. Learning support is available to students through academic supervisors and counsellors. The Writing and Language Skills Centre provides tutors that help students improve academic writing, while the Maths Skills Centre helps students succeed in statistics and mathematical courses. Like other UK universities, the university has a Disability services centre that facilitates academic and accessibility support for students with disabilities or long-term conditions.

    For example, there is step-free access throughout the campus, lifts, adjustable desks for mobility, and accessible lavatories. The University of York also has a YourSexHealth Clinic that offers free advice. In addition, students can get medical help from the local Unity Health centre. Both local and international students can register. As for mental health support, there is an Open Door service that offers the services of mental health professionals. Other than that, the Student’s Union and Support Centre also offers advice.

University of York campus is situated on the city’s outskirts, approximately 2 miles from the city centre, and covers an area of 500 acres.     Accommodation

    First-year full-time students are guaranteed accommodation at the University of York. Halls are located near the campuses and offer catered and self-catered options for applicants meeting the deadline. You can expect to pay £140 to £200 per week for a catered room, while self-catered accommodations have a £99 to £170 per week charge. Utility bills, contents insurance, and Wi-Fi are all covered by this charge. Students who don’t want accommodation at the University of York can seek private alternatives.     Transport

    The university’s campus is located optimally, only a short car or bike-ride away from the heart of York. To get to and from York, you can take a coach that arrives at the York railway station. To get there, students can use the regular service that runs from there to the campus. Another free bus service is available to get from Campus East to West and vice versa.

    International airports including Gatwick and Heathrow are in easy reach through the city. Students can take the fast train service to reach their destination. Other than that, the city is pretty easy to explore on foot or a rental bike.
