The University of York has its earliest roots in 1617 when James I was
presented with a petition for a university. From there, a series of other discussions eventually led to Olivia
Sheldon pushing the agenda further. Finally, in 1963, study abroad opportunities at the University of
York opened its doors to 230 students. Initially, 28 academic and administrative staff members worked across

through academic supervisors and counsellors. The Writing and Language Skills Centre provides tutors that help
students improve academic writing, while the Maths Skills Centre helps students succeed in statistics and
