Wrexham University

Overview

In 2008, Wrexham University was formally granted university status, making it the tenth university in Wales. Situated in the biggest town in North Wales, Wrexham, this institution is still recognised by the University of Wales and provides professional courses along with undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Among the many amenities available to the 6,500 students currently enrolled at Wrexham Glyndwr University are a sizable sports centre, a specialised crime scene lab, a radio studio, a sound recording studio, engineering laboratories, an art gallery, IT facilities, theatre studios, and most notably, a Chinese medicine clinic.

After acquiring Wrexham FC‘s Racecourse Ground, Wrexham Glyndwr University became the first university to own an international football stadium, offering additional space and amenities for students.

The primary campus is located in Wrexham, 10 minutes from the town centre, and a new campus with a focus on management and computers just opened in London. Wrexham is well served by the university’s strong road and rail connections to Manchester and Liverpool.

History

The Wrexham School of Science and Art (WSSA) opened its doors in 1887, marking the beginning of the university.

A University of Wales was then advocated for by John Viriamu Jones. Science degrees accredited by the University of London was first offered by the WSSA in 1924. Wrexham School of Science and Art underwent multiple name changes before becoming known as such.

After a merger of Denbighshire Technical College, Cartrefle Teacher Training College, and Chesterton College of Connah’s Quay, Deeside, became Denbighshire Technical Institute in 1927.

It then became Denbighshire Technical College in 1939 and North East Wales Institute of Higher Education in 1975. The The University of Salford initially validated its degrees.

Location

The biggest town in North Wales, Wrexham is tucked away in the Ceiriog Valley between the River Dee and the Clywdian mountains. Shrewsbury, Chester, Manchester, Liverpool, and Snowdonia are all close by.

This energetic town boasts a burgeoning student body and a vibrant music scene. There is held annually one of the most well-known science festivals in the UK: the Wrexham Science Festival.
